Rashid Khalidi. Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness (Columbia University Press) 1997
Professor Khalidi, currently at Columbia University, analyzes the roots and evolution of modern Palestinian nationalism, considering cultural, intellectual and political factors that influenced the formation of a distinct Palestinian identity throughout several historical phases. 304 pages.

Sari Nusseibeh and Anthony David. Once Upon a Country: A Palestinian Life (2007)
Nusseibeh, a renowned academic and Palestinian political leader, reflects on his life and ties his experiences to the history of the Palestinian people.

Ilan Peleg.  Human Rights in the West Bank and Gaza: Legacy and Politics (1996)
Study of the deterioration of human rights on West Bank and Gaza during the first intifada.

Don Peretz.  Palestinians, Refugees, and the Middle East Peace Process (1993)
Brief account of the situation of Palestinian refugees.

Sarah Roy.  The Gaza Strip:  The Political Economy of De-Development (1995)
A scholar from Harvard has documented how Israel has worked to undermine the infrastructure and economic development of the occupied territories.

Danny Rubinstein.  The Mystery of Arafat  (1995)
A leading Israeli journalist attempts to explain the enigma of Yasser Arafat.

Danny Rubinstein.  The People of Nowhere: The Palestinian Vision of Hope (1991)
Short account of the struggles of the Palestinian people by Ha’aretz’s well-respected Arab Affairs correspondent.

Edward Said.  Out of Place: A Memoir (2000) 
Controversial autobiography of the famous Palestinian academic and political activist from Columbia University.

Edward Said. The Question of Palestine (Vintage Books) Reissue edition 1997
Said, professor of comparative literature at Columbia University until his death in 2003, interprets the Middle East conflict as one of the most outspoken and visible advocates of the Palestinian cause in America.  His account considers the repercussions of the conflict on the lives of Israelis and Palestinians, and was instrumental in making the Palestinian issue the subject of serious debate.  320 pages.

Yezid Sayigh. Armed Struggle and the Search for State: The Palestinian National Movement 1949-1993 (Oxford University Press) 1999
A comprehensive and detailed account of the Palestinian National Movement from the establishment of Israel through the beginning of the Oslo process, Professor Sayigh’s exhaustive research is based on previously unavailable PLO archives, internal documents of guerrilla groups and 400 personal interviews. 1,000 pages.

Two leading Israeli journalists document the early days of the Palestinian intifada.

Salim Tamari (Editor). Jerusalem 1948: The Arab Neighborhoods and their Fate in the War (1999)
A collection of essays giving Palestinian perspectives on the fate of Arab neighborhoods around Jerusalem that were lost in the 1948 war.

Janet & John Wallach.  Arafat: In the Eyes of the Beholder (2nd Edition, 1997)
Biography of Yasser Arafat who for many decades had been the living symbol and incarnation of the Palestinian national movement. John Wallach was also the founder of Seeds of Peace.
