The public is invited to Building Hope Through Art and Dialogue, a special community program at the exhibition Offering Reconciliation. Offering Reconciliation is an exhibition of 135 ceramic bowls by top Israeli and Palestinian painters, sculptors and photographers, and is organized by the Bereaved Families Forum for Peace, Reconciliation and Tolerance, a home for hundreds of Israeli and Palestinian bereaved families who have chosen a path of reconciliation rather than revenge, and the Association of Israel's Decorative Arts.

A tour of the exhibition will be led by Seattle-area Jewish, Israeli, Palestinian and Arab artists, followed by a presentation by Robi Damelin and Ali Abu Awwad, representatives of the Bereaved Families Forum. Speakers Ali Abu Awwad and Robi Damelin are prominent activists in the Bereaved Families Forum. Damelin, an Israeli, had her son killed by a Palestinian sniper; Abu Awwad, a Palestinian, had a brother killed by an Israeli soldier. They are now active in spreading a message of reconciliation and non-violence to Palestinians and Israelis in communities and schools throughout Israel and the Palestinian Territories, as well as internationally. The program is presented by the Bellevue Art Museum, and is co-sponsored by the American Community Coalition, Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, Find Common Ground, the JT News, the Middle East Peace Camp for Children and Voices of Palestine. Founded in 1988, Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) is the only organization of rabbis in Israel from all the streams of Judaism that gives voice to the Jewish religious traditions of human rights. Dedicated to the physical security and moral vision of the State of Israel as reflected in Israel's Declaration of Independence, RHR develops educational resources on Judaism and human rights which they teach in Israeli schools and pre-army programs; lobbies for economic justice in Israel; provides support for Palestinian families facing home demolition for administrative reasons and protects Palestinian farmers' access to their agricultural land. They received the Knesset's Award for Quality of Life and the 2006 Niwano Peace Prize. This is a unique opportunity to meet a courageous and visionary rabbi and to hear first hand about the inspiring work of this Israeli organization. The Combatants for Peace movement was founded in 2005 by Israelis and Palestinians who were once actively involved in perpetuating the cycle of violence. They decided to put down their weapons, and to fight instead for peace through dialogue, reconciliation and educational outreach.

In this dark and dangerous time, musicians on both sides of the Israeli-Arab conflict have another, different vision- one of peace and cross-cultural engagement.  We'll hear music from Israeli performers like David Broza and HaDag Nachash, Lebanese like Marcel Khalife and Feyrouz; and a Palestinian like Wisam Murad.  Each song is accompanied by an introduction and commentary by Richard Silverstein, a local member who has a blog, Tikun Olam, devoted to world music and Israeli-Palestinian peace.

BREAKING THE SILENCE:The Occupation through the Lenses of Combat Soldiers

Breaking the Silence was formed by former Israeli at Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation (JRC), 303 Dodge Avenue, in Evanston.

Former Israel Defense Force (IDF) combat soldiers Avichay Sharon and Noam Chayut discussed the impact of the Israeli occupation on those charged with enforcing it. The two men are founding members of Breaking the Silence (Shovrim Shitka) which has collected testimony from more than 300 soldiers and organized a widely acclaimed exhibit of photos taken by Israeli soldiers during their patrols in the West Bank city of Hebron in which 450 Jewish settlers live amongst over 100,000 Palestinians. Many of these photos will be shown during the presentation. To date, Breaking the Silence’s testimonials have triggered 17 official IDF investigations and one internal disciplinary process.

with special guest presenter Rabbi Zari Weiss, at the home of Barbara and Howard Droker. Rabbi Zari Weiss is a widely respected teacher who makes deeply relevant connections between Jewish texts and work for justice and peace. She led text study on Halachah (Jewishlaw) in the context ofhe current situation in Israel and Palestine.

Taking an Israeli/Palestinian Peace Message to the Political Grassroots

Washington State Brit Tzedek members successfully took a balanced Israeli/Palestinian peace message all the way to the Washington State Democratic Convention. An unusually high caucus and convention turnout meant that large numbers heard our message. As with all grassroots advocacy, we encountered surprises along the way.

Beginning at Washington Democratic precinct caucuses in February 2004, an Israeli/Palestinian peace resolution moved upwards through the 37th State Legislative District convention to the King County convention (Seattle is the largest city in the county) and ultimately into the state platform, passing easily in each setting. Our effort was temporarily obscured by controversy from the county convention?s narrow passage of a call for suspension of U.S. aid while Israel is “in violation of international law.” Hard work in the Jewish community and general media refocused attention on our efforts. Intense lobbying then persuaded the Democratic state platform committee to present our platform plank to the state convention. During floor debate, an effort to replace our two-state text with “one-state” failed, but a surprise amendment removed reference to two states, so the final Washington state Democratic platform now reads: “The United States should commit to vigorous, serious, evenhanded and persistent engagement towards a peaceful resolution of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, promoting negotiations that lead to a viable solution and ensure security and good quality of life for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.”

What have we learned? Our language was attractive because most people want to do the right thing while supporting moderation and balance. Visible Brit Tzedek members were supported by a coalition including people affiliated with the Young Democrats, the ADL, the Jewish Federation and Democratic officials and delegates from around the state. We even negotiated with AIPAC! We are perceived as effective, moderate and focused, and the doors are now open for unprecedented dialogue inside and outside the Jewish community. However, opposition to U.S. “meddling” in seemingly intractable conflicts and deep anger towards Israel were key factors in stripping two-state language from the platform and for promotion of anti-Israel language. Intense education, strategizing and networking are necessary to head off negativity and conflict that can obscure our own message, even as a base has been established in Washington State for the upcoming Brit Tzedek national campaign addressed to the next president.
