Friend' Bush has done zilch to help Israel Letter to the Editor 3/23/2004 Sidney Zion's Forum piece has piqued my ire. He said if Sen. John Kerry "wants the White House he had best do a switch on the Israeli-Palestinian war - or the Jewish vote could do to him on purpose what it did to Al Gore by mistake." Zion points out that President Bush has been "the greatest friend that Israel has ever had." Oh, really? This administration has done nothing but turn a blind eye on this horrendous conflict. It was its stated policy at the beginning of this misbegotten presidency and it continues to this moment. With a wink and a nod it has approved of everything Ariel Sharon has done, from playing coy with Palestinian prime ministers to building a so-called "security" wall on occupied Palestinian territory. Oh yes, the road map was introduced by the quartet of the European Union, the United Nations, the United States and Russia. That's all it was, an introduction. There was no follow-up, no hand holding, no encouragement, and no "Condi Rice on the ground" as Bush promised, and finally there was nothing. With all hope fading for any resolution, legitimate leaders of the Israeli and Palestinian peace movement made a significant contribution to the possibility of peace by demonstrating to the world through the Geneva Accord that there was someone with whom to negotiate and something to talk about. Where was our best friend Bush when this initiative was announced? He was downplaying it and grumbling that this wasn't a government initiative. The cycle of violence continues, the hate and resentment smolders and the Israeli economy is in the dumper. This situation grows more serious every day. And this, according to Zion, is what a "friend" of Israel has accomplished. Kerry can do what Bill Clinton did and throw the power of the U.S. presidency, his energy, creativity and sincerity into this long struggle rather than allow it to devolve into a more horrible disaster than it has become under Bush, the "friend" in the past three years.
