Letter in support of Geneva Accord to Congressional Delegation
To the editor:
The following letter was initiated by Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace
To the Connecticut Congressional Delegation,
As strong supporters of Israel and as active members of the Connecticut Jewish community, we urge you to support sustained and meaningful U.S. efforts to end Israeli-Palestinian violence and bring the parties back to a process of political negotiations. In this regard, we strongly encourage you to press President Bush and his administration to end support to those Israelis and Palestinians who have bravely sought, in opposition to more extremist elements, to bridge the differences between them through compromise peace proposals that would recognize the needs of Israel and the Palestinians to live securely in mutual recognition of each other's national aspirations. In particular, we refer to the Ayalon-Nusseibah plan and the Geneva Accord, which are generating significant interest and support among the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
There is too much at stake - for the United States, Israel, and the entire world - for America to defer its leadership role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After more than three years of tragic violence, it is imperative for the United States to lend its moral and political support to those who are seeking to break out of the tragic cycle of violence through historic compromises that will be in the interests of all the parties, but especially Israel and the United States. In the absence of American leadership, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will continue to deteriorate, and it will continue to impact other aspects of our national security interests - the war against terror, Israel's security, and global economic stability. Put simply, it is a conflict that cannot and will not be ignored, and the United States cannot afford to wait for a more propitious time to take action, especially now when there are hopeful signs of movement toward compromise from both sides.
Toward this end, we urge those of you who have not yet done so to co-sponsor Senate Resolution 276, introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein, and House Resolution 479, introduced by Lois Capps (D-CA) and Amo Houghton (R-NY), to embrace recent Israeli-Palestinian peace initiatives. We thank Senator Dodd and Representative Simmons for their co-sponsorship. Your leadership will be greatly appreciated by your many constituents who deeply identify with Israel in these difficult times and who believe that the United States can and must play an instrumental role in advancing the process of peace in the Middle East.
