Letter to the Editor: Thanks to Lynch for meeting

On April 14, six members from Brit Tzedek V’shalom, the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace were fortunate to meet with Congressman Stephen Lynch who had recently returned from a trip to Gaza.

For those that don’t know us, we are a pro-Israel, pro-peace grassroots organization dedicated to finding a viable and peaceful two-state solution for the Israeli and Palestinian people.

We were pleased to learn that Lynch is supportive of President Barack Obama’s special envoy, George Mitchell, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in their endeavors in this area.

On his trip, Lynch was especially cognizant of how difficult traveling was for the Palestinians because of the multiple checkpoints. He described a shift from earlier visits to the region, noting that Palestinians and Israelis no longer interact except within a military or terrorist context, which has had the dangerous effect of dehumanizing “the other.”

He also talked about the dire need for immediate humanitarian aid and his current efforts to arrange aid for Gaza through channels that would prevent funds and materials going to Hamas.

We wanted to let Lynch know that a majority of American Jews, both religious and secular, support a two-state solution; that one can be pro-Israel and pro-peace; that a military solution cannot, has not worked; that we strongly support him in his endeavors for immediate humanitarian aid; that signing resolutions must be followed up with appropriations and consequences on both sides; that home demolitions must stop, and lastly that the blockade on Gaza must end as a part of a negotiated ceasefire that addresses Israel’s security concerns.

We thank Rep. Lynch again for meeting with us and for all of his endeavors in these areas.
