I am Jewish. I am a founding member of Congregation Beth Shalom. I have supported charities in Israel all of my adult life. My daughter spent a year at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and my husband and I and our children lived in Israel for a year.
My heart breaks as I witness Israel's military incursions in Gaza and the abysmal destruction of life and resources. I understand the pain the Hamas rocket assaults caused Israelis, and support their right to defend themselves. But what has occurred in recent weeks has only increased the hatred and exacerbated an already difficult situation. The same compassion I feel for Israeli pain I extend to the people of Gaza. A solution must and can be found that will benefit both sides. The lack of real leadership bedevils both the Israelis and the Gazans.
I still believe Rabbi Hillel's words spoken more than 2,000 years ago when asked to define Judaism while standing on one foot. "That which is hateful to you, do not unto another. This is the whole law. The rest is commentary.''
