Call Congress: Support Bill for Aggressive U.S. Peacemaking

The U.S. is now engaged in aggressive Mideast peacemaking.

Just days after being appointed U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Senator George Mitchell traveled to the region to listen to key stakeholders.  Mitchell will return soon after the Israeli elections to establish a regular and sustained U.S. presence advocating for peace.

The likelihood of Mitchell's success depends on public backing of his leadership and mission. A new resolution in the House of Representatives does just that. It supports "President Obama, Secretary Clinton, and Special Envoy Mitchell in their vigorous pursuit of a diplomatic resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Arab conflicts based on the establishment of 2 states...living side by side in peace and security..."

Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-MA) and 31 other Reps.-- Democratic and Republican, including eight Jewish co-sponsors -- have introduced  H. Res. 130. Please call your Representative to urge support for this important bill or to express thanks for early co-sponsorship.

Mitchell's job is formidable: His mission includes helping cement the shaky cease-fire in Gaza, and getting Israelis and Palestinians back on track toward negotiating a permanent peace.  Those who would see Israel live in true peace and security need Congress to show that they, too, support genuine -- and sometimes difficult -- steps toward peace.

The President said that "Senator Mitchell is fully empowered by me and Secretary Clinton. When he speaks, he speaks for us." Congress must make it clear that Mitchell speaks for them as well.
