Yes We Will

Tell the Incoming Congress: Take Leadership for Peace

The Obama Administration can make tangible progess towards Israeli-Palestinian peace, but it will need the support of Congress. The 111th Congress is set to commence in January 2009. Contact your members of Congress -- you can make a difference.

It's incumbent on us as pro-peace American Jews to take our agenda for peace directly to the incoming Congress.  President-elect Obama has made "a personal commitment to...advance the cause of peace" from the beginning of his administration.  It's critical that we build widespread support in Congress to support Obama's leadership for peace. After all, Congress represents the will of the people.

Send an email to your members of the incoming Congress with an Agenda for Peace.

Meet with your members of Congress to personally present an Agenda for Peace.

In December, Congress is generally on "vacation" and members return to their home districts, giving them an opportunity to catch up with their constituents. As such, it's a great time to pay a visit.  Brit Tzedek v'Shalom is organizing delegations to meet with  members of Congress in their home district offices. These visits can only take place if we have constituents willing to join us.  Please consider joining a home district delegation.

Write to homedistrict@btvshalom.org with your name and address if you are interested in joining a Brit Tzedek delegation.

Sample letter to your incumbent or newly-elected Representative

Dear Representative/Representative-elect,

Congratulations on winning the election. I am very pleased to have you representing me in Congress.

As an American Jew, support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is an issue of personal importance to me and to thousands of Jews across the country, including nearly 40,000 supporters of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, the Jewish Alliance for Justice and Peace, and the more than 800 signatories of their Rabbinic Letter to President-Elect Obama.  I urge you to support the main points of this letter:

*encourage the administration to appoint a high-level envoy to the region empowered to mediate and negotiate on behalf of the administration and provide full-time, on-the-ground engagement in the peace process.

*support the establishment of mechanisms of enforcement and follow-through, so that decisions made and agreements signed among the parties will be respected and brought to fruition.

Peace is not only in the best interests of Israel and the Palestinians, but also in the best interests of the U.S.  I hope that you will support active U.S. engagement in reaching a negotiated peace agreement.

Sincerely,
