Urge Your Senators to Cosponsor Feinstein/Lugar Resolution on Israeli-Palestinian Peace!

Greetings,

Exciting news!

Senators Dianne Feinstein (CA) and Richard Lugar (IN), along with 7 other original cosponsors, have just introduced S.Res.224, a bi-partisan pro-peace, pro-Israel resolution that calls for active U.S. engagement to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.   Please urge your Senators to cosponsor S.Res.224 today!

S.Res.224 represents a sharp departure from the usual language in resolutions about Israel and the Palestinians and more closely echoes the pro-peace, pro-Israel positions shared by Brit Tzedek and the vast majority of American Jews.  The resolution states clearly that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is "in the vital interests of the United States, Israel, and the Palestinian people." It further asserts that "armed force alone will not solve the Israeli-Palestinian dispute," and that "achieving Israeli-Palestinian peace could have significant impacts on security and stability in the region."

S.Res.224 calls on President Bush to make a two-state solution a "top priority" and urges him to appoint a Special Envoy for Middle East Peace to provide vigorous and ongoing engagement to return both sides to the negotiating table.  It welcomes the Arab League Peace Initiative and urges Israeli and Palestinian leaders to "embrace efforts to achieve peace and refrain from taking any actions that would prejudice the outcome of final status negotiations."

Upon the 40th anniversary of the Six-Day War, S.Res.224 calls on the U.S. to protect the next 40 years from the tragic losses and missed opportunities of the last.  It sends a strong message that real American leadership and genuine, ongoing diplomatic engagement are critical to achieving a negotiated, two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Ask your Senators to sign-on to S.Res.224 today!

S.Res.224 reaffirms the Senate's commitment to a two-state solution and to Israel's security, and denounces the use of violence and terror. What's At Stake:

Senators need to hear from American Jews who support vigorous and ongoing U.S. engagement to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The overwhelming majority of American Jews support the positions articulated in S.Res.224.  A May 2007 poll of American Jewish and Arab-American opinion commissioned by Americans for Peace Now and the Arab American Institute found that:

  • 87% of American Jews support a negotiated two-state resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
  • 80% of American Jews agree that robust U.S. engagement in Arab-Israeli peacemaking will benefit U.S. interests in the Middle East
  • 70% of American Jews support the Arab League Initiative as a basis for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
  • S.Res.224, the Feinstein/Lugar resolution, has 7 additional original cosponsors, including Sens. Dodd (D-CT), Hagel (R-NE), Baucus (D-MT), Byrd (D-WV), Sununu (R-NH), Whitehouse (D-RI), and Voinovich (R-OH).
