CHICAGO CHAPTER BRIT TZEDEK V'SHALOM
FEBRUARY 2007

--- JANUARY EVENT---
COMBATANTS FOR PEACE
Speakers: Sulaiman Al Hamri and Elik Elhanan, former Combatants,
and the Palestinian and Israeli coordinators for Combatants for
Peace, and Shimon Katz.

Brit Tzedek held four successful events with Combatants in
Chicago. A special thanks to Betsy Fuchs, Frida Kerner Furman,
Jonah Gaster, Gabriel Gaster, Susan Gzesh, Elliot Zashin and
many other volunteers for helping make these events go well.

On Thursday, Combatants spoke at a lunch and learn program at
the University of Chicago. About 35 students and faculty
attended the event including Ta'auyush member Yigal Bronner who
is now teaching at the university.

In the evening they presented at Beth Emet Synagogue in
Evanston, IL to a crowd of about 130 people. Three other
synagogues and a local peace organization co-sponsored the
event. Shimon Katz arrived in Chicago that afternoon to replce
Elik and observed the event. The entire evening was videotaped
and will be made available to us on-line shortly.

Friday morning they appeared on a local cable television
program. In the afternoon, they spoke at DePaul University to
about 80 students, faculty and community members. The audience
was a mix of Jews, Arabs and others including a few priests.
Shimon and Elik were both on the panel giving Shimon a bit of
practice.

On Friday evening Brit Tzedek supporters Saffiya Shillo and Ray
Hanania organized an event in the Palestinian community. About
90 people attended. Afterwards, they were inundated with
questions.
