Combatants for Peace 22-City Tour Continues;
Mourns Death of Founder's Daughter

 Suliaman Al Hamri and Elik Elhanan
All the proposed peace plans have basic common denominators. But grass roots citizens cannot make the peace. We are doing this outreach to nurture the popular sentiment to demand negotiations by the leaders who can make real peace treaties.

--Elik Elhanan, Israeli Coordinator for Combatants for Peace

Sadly, on January 19th, one of the founders of Combatants for Peace, Bassam Aramin, lost his 10 year old daughter Abir, two days after she was seriously injured during a clash between Palestinians and Israeli police who were attempting to break up a protest of Israel's security barrier in the West Bank town of Anata.

Suliaman Al Hamri, Elik Elhanan, and Shimon Katz mourn the tragedy that has befallen their colleague.  They will continue to carry their message of peace and reconciliation during their 22-city U.S. Brit Tzedek tour as will their colleague Bassam Aramin from his home on the West Bank.  After his daughter's death, Bassim explained, "Over time I became convinced that we couldn't solve our problem with weapons and we had to talk to the other side...I want to keep talking to Israelis so they can understand what happened to my daughter." Read article in New York Times.  Listen to interview with Bassam Aramin on NPR.

At the midpoint of Brit Tzedek's tour with Combatants for Peace, nearly 3000 people have attended events at synagogues, Jewish Community Centers, high schools, and house parties. There has been great enthusiasm about these dynamic speakers.  (See updated tour schedule below.) On January 28, Shimon Katz will replace Elik Elhanan representing Israeli Combatants for Peace. Suliaman Al Hamri will continue with the tour until its completion.

Selected Tour Highlights

  • Rabbi Eric Solomon held the inaugural event for a new Raleigh, North Carolina chapter at Beth Meyer Synagogue where he is chief rabbi. "[Elik and Sulaiman] are mensches who spoke powerfully, personally, and frankly. I felt privileged to have them in our midst. I hope, God willing, this will be the beginning of a true, active, vibrant Raleigh chapter."

  • The Rhode Island chapter had some important VIPs in attendance at their Combatants for Peace event at the Providence Jewish Community Center Social Hall.  Former Senator and Foreign Relations Committee Chair Lincoln Chafee attended, as did a staffer from Rep. Patrick  Kennedy's home office.
