SPEAKER BIO

Akiva Eldar is the diplomatic affairs analyst for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. He has been covering developments in the region for the last 20 years, and is the co-author of a new book chronicling the Jewish settlement movement.

Eldar's interview with Yasser Arafat in July 2004 was the last the Palestinian leader gave to the Israeli media.  He was also the first Israeli journalist to interview Mahmoud Abbas when he became the first Palestinian Prime Minister, in 2003.

As the Haaretz Washington correspondent, Eldar reported on U.S.-Israel relations in the mid-1990s and was at the signing of the Oslo Accords on the White House lawn in September, 1993.  Prior to that Eldar spent a decade as the paper's diplomatic correspondent.  He is a regular guest on CNN and other American news networks.
