[BTvS Portland] Save the Date: Important Brit Tzedek Meeting

Greetings,

SAVE THE DATE

IMPORTANT BRIT TZEDEK MEETING

Wednesday, November 8

FULL AND IMPORTANT AGENDA -- PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE!

We will soon be launching a national home district advocacy
campaign, "Meet the 110th Congress." on Oct. 29 Rob Levy, Brit
Tzedek's Washington, D.C. representative, will lead a telephone
conference to discuss congressional advocacy and this campaign
with activists.

At our meeting we'll have a report on the telephone conference
followed by a discussion on how our Portland chapter can most
effectively and systematically carry out advocacy work with the
Oregon congressional delegation.

Brit Tzedek is committed to changing the conversation
surrounding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict on Capitol Hill by
challenging long-held assumptions and urging reconsideration of
unproductive policies, therefore, Congressional advocacy is
among Brit Tzedek's highest priorities. The election of a new
Congress presents us with many new opportunities. Please join us
and help advance this important area of our local work.

Another important agenda item:

Combatants for Peace are coming to Portland on a national Brit
Tzedek tour in early February. Here's your chance to get in on
the ground floor of planning for this exciting visit. We
confess, one of the most rewarding parts of our work is getting
to meet the outstanding individuals from Israel and Palestine
who speak out for peace.

Here's what Combatants for Peace have to say about themselves
and their organization:

We are a group of Israeli and Palestinian individuals who were
actively involved in the cycle of violence in our area. The
Israelis served as combat soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces
and the Palestinians were involved in acts of violence in the
name of Palestinian liberation.

We all used weapons against one another, and looked at each
other only through weapon sights; however today we cooperate and
commit ourselves to the following:

* We no longer believe that the conflict can be resolved through
violence.

* We believe that the blood shed will not end unless we act
together to terminate the occupation and stop all forms of
violence.

* We call for the establishment of a Palestinian State,
alongside the State of Israel. The two states can exist in peace
and security beside each other.

* We will use only non-violent means to achieve our goals and
call for both societies to end violence.
