Urge President Bush to Intervene in Gaza Crisis
Dear Friends of Brit Tzedek,
Please contact President Bush today and urge that the
US intervene immediately to help bring an end to the current
One week ago Palestinian militants tunneled into Israel and
staged an attack on a military post, killing two soldiers and
kidnapping a third. These actions, along with the Qassam rockets
being fired daily into southern Israel, are reprehensible. At
the same time, the actions taken by Israel in response have been
too extreme and, as a result, endanger Israel's security. On
June 28 2006, Israel bombed the only power station in Gaza
cutting off electricity to more than 700,000 Palestinians and
threatening the water supply to 50% of Gaza. The Israeli Air
Force has created constant sonic booms throughout the night, and
Israeli security forces have arrested a large segment of Hamas
officials from the Palestinian cabinet and legislature.
While we hope for the safe and speedy release of Corporal
Shalit, the actions above are likely to exacerbate the
situation, threaten Cpl. Shalit's safe return, increase popular
support for Hamas, and lead to greater extremism. Furthermore,
Israel has conducted a number of fly-overs in Syrian airspace
and continues to makes threats against Damascus. These actions
could lead to a dangerous escalation of the crisis into a
regional conflict. Take Action!
Given the extremely tense situation and the increasing
humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it is critical that the US play an
active role in bringing an end to the hostilities, working to
find a diplomatic means to secure the safe release of Cpl.
Shalit and an end to Qassam rocket fire, and urging Israel to
exercise military restraint and protect Palestinian civilian
lives and infrastructure in Gaza.
America cannot be silent when Israeli and Palestinian
lives are at stake.

Subject: Intervene in Gaza Crisis Now
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted
As an American Jew, I am writing to request that the US
government actively engage with Israel and the Palestinian
Authority to intervene in the current Gaza crisis. I urge the
President to use US influence to stop the escalation of violence
and to utilize all diplomatic means possible to promote an end
to hostilities, to facilitate the safe return of Corporal Gilad
Shalit and an end to Qassam rocket attacks on Israel, and to
urge Israeli restraint in its military operations and protection
for civilian lives and infrastructure in Gaza.
American Jew concerned with the well-being of Israel, I have
watched the developments in Gaza over the last week and I
question the proportionality of Israel's response to the current
The capture by Palestinian militants of Cpl.
Gilad Shalit and the Qassam rockets being fired daily into
southern Israel are reprehensible, and Israel has the right to
use all legal measures to secure Shalit's release and stop the
rocket attacks. However, the bombing of such purely civilian
targets as the only power station in Gaza, shelling in civilian
areas, and the constant sonic booms over Gaza, are likely to
exacerbate the situation, threaten Cpl. Shalit's safe return,
increase popular support for Hamas, and lead to greater
extremism. Furthermore, Israel has conducted a number of
fly-overs in Syrian airspace and continues to makes threats
against Damascus. These actions could lead to a dangerous
escalation of the crisis into a regional conflict that is not in
the interests of Israel or the United States.
