Urge Your Representative to Sign the Hyde-Capps Letter Supporting Secretary Rice's Work for Peace

Dear Friends of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom,

In a very significant Congressional effort supporting the peace process, Representatives Henry Hyde (R-IL) and Lois Capps (D-CA) are circulating a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, commending her for her personal involvement negotiating the opening of the Rafah border crossing. If your Representative has already signed the Hyde-Capps letter, please thank them. If your Representative has not yet signed, please urge your Representative to sign the Hyde-Capps letter. A list of Representatives who have already signed follows at the bottom of this section.

We must show Congress that American Jews will stand behind a strong US involvement in the peace process.

Though we are grieve for the five Israelis killed and over fifty wounded by yet another suicide bombing in Netanya, we must not let the actions of extremists undermine our resolve to reach a negotiated peace settlement.

Last month, Secretary Rice brokered an historic agreement between Israelis and Palestinians that opened up the Rafah international border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, allowing for the passage of Palestinian workers and goods to Israel. This effort will help to reconstruct the Gaza economy, which is crucial for building a stable Palestinian state that can be a viable partner for peace with Israel.

The Hyde-Capps letter is an important vehicle for registering Congressional support for Secretary Rice's accomplishment as a first step in making the return of Israelis and Palestinians to the negotiating table a top US priority. Indeed, few diplomatic breakthroughs have occurred without such high-level US involvement.

Subject: Sign the Hyde-Capps Letter Supporting Secretary Rice's Work for Peace

To: Your Congressperson

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

As an American Jew, I urge you to sign the Hyde-Capps letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, commending her for her personal involvement negotiating the opening of the Rafah border crossing.

Though we grieve for the five Israelis killed and over fifty wounded by yet another suicide bombing in Netanya, we must not let the actions of extremists undermine our resolve to reach a negotiated peace settlement.

Last month, Secretary Rice brokered an historic agreement between Israel and the Palestinians that opened up the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt, allowing for the passage of Palestinian workers and goods to Israel. This effort will help to rebuild the Gaza economy, which is crucial for the possibility of building a stable Palestinian state that can be a viable partner for peace with Israel.

The letter to Secretary Rice, written by Representatives Henry Hyde (R-IL) and Lois Capps (D-CA), is an important vehicle for registering Congressional support for Secretary Rice's accomplishment as a first step in making the return of Israelis and Palestinians to the negotiating table a top US priority. Indeed, few diplomatic breakthroughs have occurred in the region without the personal involvement of such high-level US officials.

I urge you to support Israel and the peace process by signing onto the Hyde-Capps letter. To join the letter, please contact Lara Alameh with the Committee on International Relations at 5-8097 or Jeremy Rabinovitz with Rep. Capps at 5-3601.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
