Executive Director Updates

August 15, 2003

Dear Members and Supporters,

Brit Tzedek v'Shalom has continued to grow and flourish over the past few months. Some of the highlights are:

• NATIONAL CONFERENCE: ISRAEL'S ROAD TO PEACE: THE ROLE OF AMERICAN JEWS
Register now for our upcoming national conference scheduled for October 31st-November 2nd in the heart of downtown Boston. Presenters include MK Amram Mitzna, Former MK Naomi Chazan, Representative Barney Frank, Diane Balser, Cherie Brown, Marcia Freedman, Nan Fink Gefen, Susannah Heschel, Herbert C. Kelman, Pnina LaHav, Yehezkel Landau, Robert Jay Lifton, Ian Lustick, Steven David Masters, Janis Plotkin and many other scholars, writers, activists, and spiritual and community leaders from around the country. For more information, go to www.btvshalom.org/conference/

• CONGRESSIONAL ADVOCACY
Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Califonria) requested our support for two initiatives. Brit Tzedek wrote to members of Congress to support legislation co-sponsored by Capps's office endorsing the Bush Administration's Road Map to Peace and the Administration's decision to directly and immediately appropriate $20 million to begin rebuilding Palestinian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

• ACTION ALERTS
We have issued eleven Action Alerts in support of the Road Map since December 2002, stepping up our efforts in the past few months to encourage the Bush administration to stand by its stated commitment to the Road Map to Peace. Brit Tzedek has consistently urged the U.S. administration to stand firm in face of repeated obstacles in order to create the opportunity for a real and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

We are currently in the process of establishing local chapter phone trees in order to maximize our grassroots capacity. We will also soon be upgrading our technological capacity to effectively respond rapidly to political issues related to the peace process.

• CAMPAIGN TO BRING THE SETTLERS HOME TO ISRAEL
We now have nearly 7000 signers to our Call. Please continue to encourage your friends and family to sign on at http://bringthemhome.btvshalom.org/ We have had extensive press coverage of our Call since it's launch. Articles about the Call have appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Jerusalem Post, Seattle Jewish Transcript, Jewish Exponent, St. Petersburg Times, Sun-Sentinel, and Boston Globe. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency wrote an article on the campaign that was serialized in the Jewish press throughout the country. In addition, the Call was covered by the BBC and NPR. For more information, see www.btvshalom.org/pressrelease/inthemedia.html

• UPCOMING TOURS
This fall Brit Tzedek will be sponsoring speaking tours for Member of Knesset Amram Mitzna, Board President Marcia Freedman, and board member Steve Masters. Mitzna's tour includes Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
