A Pilot's Courage to Say "No"
Yonatan Shapira

In this workshop, an Israeli Air Force refuser will discuss the personal and political considerations that lead him to write the "Pilot's Letter" that is now at the core of a heated national debate in Israel about what it means to serve one's country. The speaker, who until recently was a respected senior officer of 11 years in the Israeli army's elite "Black Hawk" helicopter squadron, was dismissed from the Israeli Air Force after authoring and issuing this letter in which he refused to serve in the occupied territories. The letter, which has since been signed by 26 other IAF Pilots, declares the pilots' refusal to participate in attacks on Palestinian territory, claiming these actions are "illegal and immoral," and "a direct result of the ongoing occupation which is corrupting all of Israeli society."
