David E. Matz is the founder and Director of the Graduate Programs in Dispute Resolution at UMass Boston. He is an active dispute intervener, serving as a Superior Court mediator and as a private practitioner.

In Israel, he was central in developing policy and practice for the Israeli Ministry of Justice and Supreme Court in integrating mediation into the judicial system. He has also applied these approaches to the peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Recently Matz has studied the question of how the settlements and the controversies surrounding them have played a role in the possible negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. He has focused on the political strength of the settlements in relationship to the Israeli government, and the circumstances under which the government may be able to close some settlements
