Action Alert

Action Alert – Completed 9/12/03

[POSTED: September 7th, 2003]
Save the Peace Process

PLEASE ACT NOW: Fax or call President Bush and Secretary of State Powell by Friday, September 12, urging them to take immediate decisive action to re-establish the peace process.

Dear Brit Tzedek members and supporters,

With the resignation of Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process appears very much in jeopardy. This would be a disaster for both sides. It is not melodramatic to say that at this point that despair is the ally of the extremists, and that we must push for decisive action by the United States in order to get the parties back on the road to peace.

We urge you to write to President Bush and Secretary of State Powell asking them to bring pressure to bear on:

  • Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to exercise restraint and bring a halt to the so-called "targeted liquidations" and other military incursions that can create, in the words of Secretary of State Colin Powell "more Hamas killers in the future", and to work with the incoming Palestinian Prime Minister in good faith to re-embark on the peace process.
  • Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat to give the incoming Prime Minister, most likely to be Ahmed Qureia (Abu Ala), full powers over all Palestinian security forces, and the ability to bring about an effective cessation of violence and reengage in the peace process.
A sample letter for faxing and talking points for a telephone call, along with contact numbers, are provided below. (Please note: due to a change in White House email policy, emailing is currently not effective as a means of communication for action alerts.)

We also ask you to circulate this Action Alert as widely as possible--please send it to your family, friends, and colleagues, and repost it to any relevant listservs. President Bush must know that this is an issue among American Jews.

Please let us know that you have responded to this action alert by sending us an email at advocacy@btvshalom.org so that we can gauge the impact of our action alerts.

L'Shalom,

Diane Balser and Steve Masters

Chair and Co-Chair of the Advocacy/Public Policy Committee

  • You are a Jewish American who supports the President's leadership in the Middle East peace process, and are very much troubled to see the breakdown in this process over the past week.
  • You ask the President to take immediate decisive action to bring pressure to bear on:
    • Israeli Prime Minister Sharon to exercise restraint and bring a halt to the so-called "targeted liquidations" and to work with the incoming Palestinian Prime Minister in good faith to re-embark on the peace process.
    • Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat to give the incoming Prime Minister full powers over all Palestinian security forces and the ability to bring about an effective cessation of violence and reengage in the peace process.
  • You believe that this is in the best interests of Israel, in the best interests of peace, and also in the best interests of the United States.

Sample Fax Message

Below is a brief sample message you can send; feel free and encouraged to personalize it.

President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Fax: 202-456-6218 (Office of Public Liaison)

Mr. President:

As a Jewish American, I have very much supported your efforts to date to bring an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The events of the past week are deeply troubling, as they threaten a complete breakdown in the Middle East peace process. Only active engagement by the United States can save it.

Your leadership is vitally needed now to take immediate decisive action to revive the peace process. I respectfully request that you bring pressure to bear both on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to exercise restraint and bring a halt to the so-called "targeted liquidations" that can create, in the words of your Secretary of State Colin Powell "more Hamas killers in the future", and to work with the incoming Palestinian Prime Minister in good faith to re-embark on the peace process; and on Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat to give the incoming Prime Minister full powers over all Palestinian security forces, and the ability to bring about an effective cessation of violence and reengage in the peace process.

If the Israeli-Palestinian peace process fails, this will be a tragedy for both peoples.

sincerely,
