Action Alert

Action Alert -- Completed 5/31/2003

POSTED: May 22nd, 2003]
DON'T LET THE ROAD MAP BE DERAILED

ACTION REQUESTED: Call, fax, or email President Bush and Secretary of State Powell as soon as possible urging them to bring all pressure to bear on the Palestinian Authority and Israel to immediately implement the measures called for in the Road Map, and for the government of Israel to formally accept the Road Map without changes.

Dear Brit Tzedek members and supporters,

With heavy hearts we harshly condemn the recent suicide bombings that have killed 11 Israelis (including at least one Palestinian Arab Israeli) and injured scores. To the victims' loved ones, we send our deepest condolences. To the survivors and their families, we send strength and courage. We also condemn Israeli actions in the West Bank and Gaza that have resulted in the many Palestinian civilian deaths. To their families we also send strength and courage.

It is no coincidence that these attacks followed Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's first meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) since the latter assumed office. It is tragic that a minority of Palestinians wish to derail the Road Map for peace and that they are using horrific methods intended to instill fear and anger among Israelis. These actions must not be allowed to derail the Road Map.

If progress towards peace is to be made, pressure must be brought to bear on both parties for immediate implementation of the measures called for by the Road Map. At the same time, it is crucially important that the Israeli government formally accept the Road Map, without changes, which it still has not done.

Please contact the President and Secretary of State Powell as soon as possible to urge them to stay the course on the Road Map, to put all pressure on both parties to the conflict for immediate implementation and on the Israeli government to formally accept the Road Map in its current form with no changes.

IF THE ROAD MAP IS NOT IMPLEMENTED, THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE WILL WORSEN.

  • We call on the Bush administration to pressure the Palestinian Authority to immediately implement the measures called for in the Road Map.
  • We call on the Bush administration to pressure the Israeli government to formally accept the Road Map without changes and to immediately implement the measures called for in the Road Map.
Once again, we ask you to CALL, FAX, or EMAIL the President and Secretary of State Powell asking them to stay the course on the Road Map. (A telephone call or fax is preferable.) Talking points for a telephone call and a sample letter for faxing or emailing can be found below. [click here]

We also ask you to circulate this Action Alert as widely as possible--please send it to your family, friends, and colleagues, and please repost it to any relevant listservs.

It is important that you let us know that you have responded to this action alert by sending us an email at advocacy@btvshalom.org, so that we can gauge the impact of our action alerts.

L'Shalom,

Diane Balser and Steve Masters
Chair and Co-Chair of the Advocacy/Public Policy Committee

Mr. President:

As a Jewish American, I am deeply saddened by the latest suicide attacks in Israel. However, I also deeply believe that these cannot be allowed to derail the Road Map.

The Road Map represents the best chance for peace for the Israelis and Palestinians. If it does not move ahead, we risk further violence of cataclysmic proportions.

For this reason, it is also crucially important that the government of Israel formally accept the Road Map, without changes, as the Palestinian Authority has already done.

I therefore respectfully request that you bring all pressure to bear on both parties to have the Road Map move ahead. Your leadership is needed now more than ever in this crisis.

A peaceful solution to the crisis in the Middle East is crucial not only to the well-being of Israelis and Palestinians, but also ultimately to the United States and the whole world, now more than ever. Insisting on both parties' immediate implementation of the Road Map, in its present form, will be a major step towards peace.

Sincerely,

[SIGN YOUR NAME]
